Caliper bracket bolt torque value.
Hello,all I'm about to change my front brake pads and rotors on my passat SE after 75k. I'm looking for the torque value of the bolts that hold the caliper bracket on. And the bolt for the caliper also. TIA Dave. I've got the the same exact same question. I started working on the rear brakes and rotors tonight. I got one corner done but couldn't find the torque spec for the caliper bracket bolts.
For now, I set the caliper bracket bolts to 90 ft-lbs. Seemed tight enough but I'd like to know the exact spec. I read somewhere that the caliper bolts are between 22 and 26 foot-pounds.
However, I couldn't get my torque wrench on it anyways Just a heads up, I had a tough time getting the caliper bracket bolts off. I had to jack the car way up in the air and use a 16 inch breaker bar.
Anything longer would hit the floor. I'm unsure if this had any effect. I wasn't approaching it scientifically. Also, the rotor was stuck on the hub pretty good. A couple blast of PB Blaster in the holes on the hub and a few wacks with the dead-blow and off if came.
Hey, Rollcoal, I called my local VW dealer and the girl in the service dept said why should i give you the torque specs. So you can give it to another shop that's doing the work for you. I told her i was doing the work myself and she sarcastically said i have a service tech call you. Well that never happened. So after a few hours of searching i found the 1A auto video on you tube.
I did the rears last year. I didn't know that the bolt was triple square drive and i stripped the bolt and destroyed the socket. Now i try to read up as much info as i can before i start a job.

I just did the rear brakes on my 03 EXT. I didn't double check the other specs that were listed but meerschm posted a pic that appears to be the same page I have in my manual he says it's Helm? Unbolt the two caliper guide pins and remove them from the bushing. You will need a 9mm hex bit, it is not very common size so check your tool box to see if you have one. A worn out rotor will have a lip that will prevent the caliper from being removed.
Use a C-Clam to compress the caliper pistons. Check your brake fluid level after compressing each caliper to make sure it doesn't overflow. Remove the caliper bracket. You will probably need a breaker bar to remove the two bolts, the bolts are very tight. Use a T30 bit to remove the brake rotor set screw. Remove and discard the brake rotor. Clean the caliper bracket with a wire brush and lubricate all of the points that come in contact with the brake pad.
Caliper bracket bolts are one time use. Install the caliper bracket and torque the bolts in two steps. Step2, turn the bolts degrees. Clean the brake caliper with a wire brush. Be careful not to damage the caliper dust boots. Lubricate all of the parts of the caliper with anti-seize that come in contact with the brake pads. Install the caliper and tighten down the caliper guide pins. You may need to press in the caliper pistons a little more.
Install the wear sensor into the inner brake pad. Connect the brake wear sensor and bolt up the wear sensor connector to the caliper. Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor and unbolt the wear sensor connector from the caliper.
Remove the caliper and lay it on on of the control arm so the brake fluid hose doesn't get damaged. Make sure that the electronic or "electric" parking brake has been released. If the EPB hasn't been released, you won't be able to pull the rear caliper out of the bracket. Step on the brake pedal and push down the EPB switch to release the parking brakes. Make sure the LED light on the switch is not turned on. Attention - If your Mazda6 is equipped with the electronic parking brake or " EPB ", you will need to place the EPB into " service " or " maintenance " mode before compressing the rear caliper pistons.
To place the EPB into maintenance mode, here are the steps from the Mazda service manual as detailed on the Mazda forum. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position but do not start the engine.
For vehicles with the push button start, tap the button once to enter ACC accessory power and then a second time to switch "ON" the vehicle but do not push the brake pedal so that you do NOT start the engine. Release the electronic parking brake.
Continue holding the accelerator down and the EPB switch down. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position. You should see the yellow or orange "electric parking brake warning light" on the gauge cluster and "Park Brake Maintenace Mode" on the LCD screen. Let go of the accelerator and the EPB switch.
To exit maintenance mode, follow the instructions near the bottom of this page.

These instructions are the same as for newer Ford vehicles which is not surprising since Ford and Mazda used to have a long running partnership. Warning Proceed with caution and at your own risk! Place wheel chocks on both sides of the front wheels to prevent the car from moving. Slightly loosen the five lug nuts on the rear wheel by turning them counterclockwise with the tire iron. Carefully raise the rear of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands.
I prefer to work on one side of the car at a time to keep three tires on the ground for extra safety. Spin off the 5 lug nuts in the counterclockwise direction and set them aside in a safe place. Pull off the rear wheel to reveal the caliper, bracket, rotor and suspension.
The two bolt heads face in towards the trunk of the car. If the caliper slider pin or "guide bolt" spins as you are attempting to loosen the caliper bolt, hold it in place with a thin 17mm cone wrench also known as a "spanner wrench" commonly used on bicycles.
Then loosen the upper 13mm caliper bolt by turning it clockwise as seen from the outside of the car. Try to avoid bending, kinking, pulling or stressing the rubber brake fluid hose. Rest the caliper on the suspension or suspend it from the spring with a bungee cord or some twine.
